Frequently Asked Questions & Fees

What if I am not a “Mom” can I still see you?

Yes, 100% you can!

Although the name MOM SQUAD PHYSIO implies “Mom’s” you DO NOT need to be one to seek my services. In fact, many women who have never had children still experience pelvic floor dysfunction and pain. Pregnancy and postpartum care just happen to be an area of pelvic health that I am extremely passionate about and actively advocate for.

What type of things can you help me with?

  • Urinary incontinence (leaking pee)

  • Frequent urination or strong urge to pee

  • Pelvic pain including tailbone pain

  • Vaginal prolapse

  • Pain with intercourse (including vaginismus, vulvodynia, vestibulodynia)

  • Constipation

  • Fecal incontinence (trouble controlling bowels)

  • Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction

  • Diastasis Recti (abdominal seperation)

  • Low back and hip pain

  • Preparation for labour & delivery

  • Sciatica

  • Postpartum rehabilitation for core & pelvic floor

What can I expect for my first appointment?

Your first appointment with me can be at my office, in your home, or virtually. I offer a hybrid model of care so that you have the option to choose what suits you best.

All initial appointments involve a review of your relevant health history, current concerns, and various pelvic health related questions. I will provide education on basic pelvic anatomy so you gain a deeper understanding of your body. I may ask you to perform some different movements and/or provide some recommendations for you to work on. In-person initial appointments typically involve a physical assessment including an internal pelvic exam if time allows and if you feel comfortable.

Do I need a doctor’s referral?

No, a physician referral is not required to see a physiotherapist in Nova Scotia. Physiotherapy is a direct access service. However, you may want to check with your insurance provider as some do require a referral for coverage.

Is this covered by insurance?

Most insurance companies offer partial or full coverage for private physiotherapy services. I recommend checking with your insurance provider to determine your physiotherapy benefits, deductible, co-pays and/or if a prescription is required. Please note, private physiotherapy is not covered by MSI in Nova Scotia.

Do you direct bill?

No, at this time I do not direct bill private insurance companies. You will be provided a receipt of physiotherapy service with my license number that you can submit to your insurance provider for reimbursement.

What if I have my period?

My treatment does not change if you are on your period. This is your choice based on your personal comfort level. If internal work is planned for that session you will need to remove any internal menstrual products like tampons or diva cups.

Can I see you when I am pregnant?

Yes you can but not until after the first trimester (14+ weeks). I always prefer you speak to your OBGYN or care provider about pelvic floor physiotherapy to ensure there are no contraindications to treatment, but this is not required. Please note, we can not perform internal exams during pregnancy if you have been told to abstain from sexual intercourse.

How soon after having my baby can I see you?

At 8 weeks postpartum. This is to ensure you have had your 6 week follow up with your physician.

Do I need to have an internal exam?

No, you do not have to do anything that makes you feel uncomfortable. The internal exam is performed because it allows us to assess the pelvic floor in the best way possible. In order to obtain a thorough picture of your pelvic floor health we need to feel the muscles which happen to be inside the vagina. Great care is taken to ensure you know exactly what to expect. All of the risks/benefits of this type of treatment are explained so that you can make an informed choice. In some circumstances an internal rectal exam may also be recommended. You are always welcome to bring someone with you to an appointment if this makes you more comfortable.

What does an In-Home Women’s Health Physiotherapy visit look like?

It’s quite simple. I bring all of my equipment to you so everything is the same as the office except in the comfort of your own home. I have a mobile treatment table that I will set up. I ask that you pick a location in your home that provides privacy and feels comfortable to you. The only thing I ask of you is to have a pillow, a set of sheets, and a small garbage can ready for me. If there are exercises I want you to do we will also go over these together. We will discuss your treatment plan and book any follow up appointments you might need before I leave.

What is required for a Virtual Tele-Health appointment?

Once a virtual tele-health appointment is booked you will receive an email with a link to our virtual video call. If it is your first visit you will also be emailed a health intake and consent form which need to be completed prior to your call. You will need an electronic device and internet for this service. If you are using an iOS device such as an iPhone or iPad you will need to download the free “Jane Online Appointment App”. Computers and Android devices do not require the app and should use Chrome or Firefox for the best connection. Payment can be made via credit card or e-transfer to info@momsquadphysio.ca at the end of your appointment.
